چکیده

Epitaxial strain has been shown to produce dramatic changes the orbital structure in transition metal perovskite oxides and, turn, rate of oxygen electrocatalysis therein. Here, epitaxial is used investigate relationship between surface electronic and prototypical fuel cell cathode systems. Combining high-temperature electrical-conductivity-relaxation studies synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 La0.8Sr0.2Co0.2Fe0.8O3 thin films under varying degrees reveals a strong correlation catalysis rates. In both systems, biaxial tensile simultaneously exhibit fastest reaction kinetics lowest electron occupation dz2 orbitals. These results are discussed context broader chemical trends descriptors proposed for oxides.

Strain effects on oxygen migration in perovskites.

Fast oxygen transport materials are necessary for a range of technologies, including efficient and cost-effective solid oxide fuel cells, gas separation membranes, oxygen sensors, chemical looping devices, and memristors. Strain is often proposed as a method to enhance the performance of oxygen transport materials, but the magnitude of its effect and its underlying mechanisms are not well-under...

Polypyrrole-assisted oxygen electrocatalysis on perovskite oxides

Nitrogen-containing electrocatalysts, such as metal–nitrogen–carbon (M–N–C) composites and nitrogen-doped carbons, are known to exhibit high activities for an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Moreover, even if the mechanism by which nitrogen improves the activities is not completely understood, a strong electronic interaction between nitrogen and active sites has been found in these composites....

Interplay of charge and orbital ordering in manganese perovskites

A model of localized classical electrons coupled to lattice degrees of freedom and, via the Coulomb interaction, to each other, has been studied to gain insight into the charge and orbital ordering observed in lightly doped manganese perovskites. Expressions are obtained for the minimum energy and ionic displacements caused by given hole and electron orbital configurations. The expressions are ...

Beyond the volcano limitations in electrocatalysis--oxygen evolution reaction.

Oxygen evolution catalysis is restricted by the interdependence of adsorption energies of the reaction intermediates and the surface reactivity. The interdependence reduces the number of degrees of freedom available for catalyst optimization. Here it is demonstrated that this limitation can be removed by active site modification. This can be achieved on ruthenia by incorporation of Ni or Co int...
